3-Step Skincare Routine for Men

Looking for A Simple, Effective and Easy-TO-Follow routine.

For begINners or anyone looking to understand their skin better.

Like I did. Start here.

01. Cleanse — Remove Dirt, Oil and Overnight Build-Up

Start your morning with a gentle facial cleanser to remove excess oil, sweat, product residue and dead skin cells that naturally accumulate on the skin's surface overnight.

If you use retinol as part of your evening skincare routine, cleansing in the morning is particularly useful for removing any remaining product residue and keeping your skin fresh. Retinol encourages skin cell turnover, so maintaining a consistent cleansing routine helps support healthy-looking skin. However, avoid harsh scrubs or aggressive cleansing, as retinol can make your skin more sensitive, dry or prone to irritation.

MAPT tip: Use lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser suited to your skin type. Your skin should feel clean, not tight or stripped. If you're using retinol, remember that daily SPF is essential to help protect your skin from UV damage.

Important distinction: Retinol doesn't simply cause dead skin to build up overnight, and you shouldn't need to exfoliate every morning. Gentle cleansing is sufficient for most people; over-cleansing or scrubbing can compromise the skin barrier, particularly when using retinoids.

02. Moisturise — keep your skin hydrated

Apply a facial moisturiser after cleansing to help maintain hydration and support the skin barrier.

Why it matters: Dehydrated skin can look dull, feel rough and make fine lines more noticeable.

MAPT tip: Choose a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturiser if your skin is oily or prone to breakouts. Drier skin may benefit from a richer cream.

Important distinction: hydration versus moisturising.

Hydration refers to the water content within the skin, while moisturisers help attract water, soften the skin and reduce water loss. Ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and glycerin act as humectants, drawing water into the outer layers of the skin, while emollients and occlusives help soften the skin and reduce moisture loss.

Don't skip moisturiser just because you have oily skin. Oily skin can still become dehydrated. Choose a lightweight, non-comedogenic formula if you're prone to excess oil or breakouts, or a richer cream if your skin is dry.

03. Protect — use SPF every morning

Finish your morning routine with a broad-spectrum SPF 30–50 sunscreen. Apply it to your face, ears and neck, and reapply as directed, especially after sweating or spending time outdoors.

Why it matters: UV exposure contributes to premature skin ageing, pigmentation and skin cancer. Sun protection is one of the most important steps in a long-term skin health routine.

MAPT tip: Choose an SPF you enjoy wearing. A comfortable, lightweight formula makes it easier to use daily.

Important distinction: If you prefer mineral filters, look for Zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide, and choose a fragrance-free formula if your skin is sensitive or reactive.

A Quick Guide to Better Skin: Tips, Timing and When to Seek Professional Help

  • Morning vs evening routine:

Cleanse and moisturise in the evening; use all three steps in the morning.

  • Common men's skincare mistakes:

Over-exfoliating, using harsh soaps, skipping SPF and expecting overnight results.

  • When should you see results?

Skin hydration can improve relatively quickly, while changes in texture and pigmentation may take weeks or months.

  • When a basic routine isn't enough:

Persistent acne, pigmentation, uneven texture or established signs of ageing may benefit from a consultation with a specialist followed by an assessment.
